New: Lake Superior agates, vibrant new finds from Malawi & our latest video

In this week’s shop update, everything revolves around genuine classics from the US and brilliant, colorful displays from Africa!

Main Focus: The Fascination of Lake Superior Agates

The Lake Superior agate is considered a true treasure of North American geology among mineral collectors. Formed over a billion years ago in the volcanic rift system of Lake Superior, these pieces were transported hundreds of kilometers and naturally tumbled by massive glaciers during the last ice age.

Because of this natural ice-age tumbling, their exteriors are smoothly polished by nature itself, which is why many collectors choose to display them in their original, uncut form.

These agates owe their characteristic range of colors to the exceptionally high iron content present during their formation, glowing in deep reds, radiant oranges, and warm browns. An absolute eye-catcher is the fine fortification banding: the sharp, often fortress-like patterns create a fascinating contrast between snow-white or transparent quartz and fiery chalcedony. Due to their multi-million-year journey through glacial ice, these pieces also feature an extraordinarily dense and fine quartz crystallization, revealing an unmatched luster after polishing.

Burst of Color: New Malawi Agates Now Available

Joshua is currently on location in Malawi. Although the export ban on raw stones unfortunately remains in place, we have fantastic news for you: we still have beautiful, polished pieces as well as rough material from previous stocks available on our website!

The specimens from the volcanic deposits in Malawi (especially the Ngabu region) are among the most sought-after agates worldwide. They impress with their incredibly dense, high-contrast banding and vibrant colors. From fiery red to warm yellow and orange, all the way to purple accents and snow-white quartz eyes – these pieces are true showstoppers for any display case!
