Laguna Agates from Chihuahua, Mexico: A Geological Masterpiece
Dear Collectors of beautiful Agates,
Chihuahua, Mexico’s largest state, holds one of the most captivating geological stories on our planet. Around 20 to 30 million years ago, massive volcanic eruptions shaped a landscape still marked by frozen lava and hidden cavities. Over millennia, silica-rich solutions seeped into these natural chambers, crystallizing into the renowned Laguna Agates. Their vivid violet, blue, and rose hues, along with fine banding, make them prized among collectors.
The deposits are found near Chihuahua City, often in dried lagoons or shallow pits where erosion has uncovered the stones. Unlike many other agate sources worldwide, Laguna Agates are remarkably pure, with minimal inclusions and are polished by us, to showcase their surface and their inner beauty.
What makes these agates truly special is their unique formation history, reflected in fine, banding and rare structures like floaters. Even more intriguing is a phenomenon few know about: very rarely, some Laguna Agates from this region exhibit a mysterious blue or green fluorescence under UV light, caused by traces of uranium or organic inclusions. A hidden secret that only reveals itself in the dark.
